Bio

Stephen Gardner focuses his artistic work in three creative areas: drawing, painting, and illustrating. He finds satisfaction in the way that each enriches the other.

Gardner is an ardent drawer. His intimate drawings are based on the people in his community and are inspired by his extensive on-site sketchbook work. Later in his studio, Gardner works with pencil, ink, watercolor, and gouache in capturing visual likeness and mood of the subject.

Gardner’s oil paintings are approximately life size. His realistic representations of figures reveal a unique blend of traditional influences and modern sensibilities. On occasion, Gardner paints portrait commissions.

As an illustrator, Gardner produces detailed garden illustrations for magazines and books. He has regularly contributed to Better Homes and Gardens and Garden Deck & Landscape magazines. An array of his illustrations can also be seen in the book Small Gardens of Savannah and Thereabouts, Pelican Press.

Stephen Gardner is a professor at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) since 1993. He serves as Director of the Drawing Minor and acts as Drawing Coordinator for the Foundations Studies Department. In 2006 he received a Presidential Fellowship from SCAD to produce The Artist’s Traveling Sketchbook, a book that brings together a collection of travel drawings and sketches made by historical masters, contemporary artists, and students. It investigates and assesses the history, focus, and purpose of theses drawings.

Stephen Gardner received a B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design and a M.F.A. from Parsons School of Design.
